What the list tells you

The first coffee is at 5:00 — as early as anywhere in central Tokyo. Only Akihabara opens as early, and it does it with one McDonald's. Asakusa runs on temple visitors, market traders and night-shift workers rather than on commuters, and the opening times follow that. Two McDonald's branches and Cafe Tomorrow are open before 7:00.

Cafe Tomorrow at 6:30 looks like a one-off kissaten and is a three-shop chain. It rates 4.3 and the Shōwa-era room is the real thing, but the same sign is in Akabane and Nippori. Counting shops rather than atmosphere is the only way to keep this page straight: before 7:00, central Tokyo is chains all the way down.

At 8:00 the serious coffee arrives. FUGLEN ASAKUSA rates 4.1 across 2,843 reviews, Suke6 Diner 4.4 across 1,460 and KIELO COFFEE 4.7 across 373. All three open at 8:00, which in this neighbourhood is late rather than early.

The best-rated place open by 8:00 is Café de Raak at ★4.7 across 406 reviews. It opens at 7:30, between the chains and the 8:00 crowd — the quietest hour of the Asakusa morning and the one most visitors miss.

If you are here for the temple

Sensō-ji opens its grounds at all hours and the main hall from 6:00. If you are going at dawn, coffee before the temple means two McDonald's branches and Cafe Tomorrow; coffee after it means most of the neighbourhood, since 19 places are open by 8:00.

I run a stand in Kanda, about fifteen minutes away on the Ginza line, open from 7:00 on weekdays. It is not a reason to leave Asakusa in the morning — Asakusa is better at mornings than Kanda is.
