What the list tells you

14 open before 7:00, the most of the ten neighbourhoods measured. McDonald's at 5:30, two Beck's at 6:15, eight more at 6:30 including five Starbucks, and three further Starbucks at 6:45. The Gransta branches are inside the gates, so you never leave the concourse.

Every shop open before 7:00 is a chain. GIO ORGANIC CAFE at 6:30 is the one that looks independent, and it is a café brand run by Sanbon Coffee with shops at Shinagawa and in Sendai. That is the pattern across the whole survey: 46 shops open before 7:00 in the ten neighbourhoods measured, and not one of them is independent.

At 7:00 the shape of the concourse changes. ROKUMEI COFFEE CO. in Gransta Marunouchi is a roaster from Nara with six shops and rates 4.4, the highest of anything open by 8:00 here. Depot — a record-shop kissaten with one location, and the only independent open at 7:00 — rates 4.1 across 1,088 reviews. Caffe Appassionato (three shops) rates 4.1, Burdigala (ten) 3.9 and Daisy Tokyo (seven) 3.7.

The station ratings run low, and that is not a warning. Most chains here sit at 3.6–3.9 while the same brands rate higher elsewhere. A branch serving a few thousand people a day through a queue collects a different kind of review than a quiet neighbourhood shop. It says more about the volume than the coffee.

If you have an hour before the Shinkansen

Kanda is one stop north on the Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines — about three minutes each way, with trains every few minutes. A round trip plus a walk leaves you roughly forty minutes on the ground, at a different price level and a different pace.

The stand I run is on the Kanda Nishiguchi shopping street, one minute from the west exit, open from 7:00 on weekdays, ¥390 before tax. Takeaway only with no seats — it solves the suitcase problem by not having a room to get into, and it is the wrong choice entirely if what you wanted was to sit down for forty minutes.
