Coffee near Tokyo Station — what opens early, and what is one stop away

Tokyo Station has twenty coffee shops within 350 m. Five of them are Starbucks. If you are there before 7:00, your options are almost entirely chains, and if you have an hour to spare there is a better use for it than queueing in the concourse.

Weekday opening times and ratings from each shop's public Google Maps listing, checked 12 August 2026. Distances are straight-line from the station centre, so a 100 m shop can still be a five-minute walk once you account for which exit you use — Tokyo Station is large enough that the exit matters more than the distance.

What the list actually tells you

Before 7:00 it is chains. Doutor and four Starbucks branches open at 6:30, and that is the whole field. If you are catching an early Shinkansen, that is what is available and it is perfectly fine — the Gransta branches are inside the gates, so you never leave the concourse.

Two independents open at 7:00. ROKUMEI COFFEE CO. in Gransta Marunouchi is a roaster from Nara and rates 4.4, the highest of any coffee-led shop in this list. Depot rates 4.1. If you want something other than a chain and it is early, those are the two.

The station ratings run low, and that is not a warning. Most of the chains here sit at 3.6–3.9 while the same brands rate higher elsewhere. A branch serving a few thousand people a day through a queue collects a different kind of review than a quiet neighbourhood shop. It says more about the volume than the coffee.

If you have an hour before the Shinkansen

Leaving the station is realistic. Kanda is one stop north on the Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines — about three minutes each way, and trains run every few minutes. A round trip plus a walk leaves you roughly forty minutes on the ground.

What you get for that is a different price level and a different pace. Coffee on the Kanda Nishiguchi shopping street runs ¥390–500 rather than station pricing, and nothing there has a queue at 7:30 in the morning.

The shop I run — nono coffee — is on that street, one minute from the west exit, open from 7:00 on weekdays, ¥390 before tax. It is takeaway only with no seats, so it solves the suitcase problem by not having a room to get into, and it is the wrong choice entirely if what you wanted was to sit down for forty minutes.

Questions people ask

What coffee is open earliest at Tokyo Station?

McDonald's inside JR Tokyo Station opens at 5:30. Among coffee shops, Doutor and four Starbucks branches open at 6:30. The first independent shops are Depot and ROKUMEI COFFEE at 7:00.

How many Starbucks are there at Tokyo Station?

Five within 350 m: Tokyo Station Shinkansen, Gransta Marunouchi, Gransta Yaesu, Tokyo Gift Palette and JR Tokyo Station. Their ratings sit between 3.6 and 3.9, which is normal for a station branch handling that volume.

Is there good independent coffee at Tokyo Station?

ROKUMEI COFFEE CO. in Gransta Marunouchi rates 4.4 and opens at 7:00. Depot opens at 7:00 and rates 4.1. Beyond those two the station area is chains until 8:00.

I have an hour before my Shinkansen. Can I leave the station?

Yes. Kanda is one stop north on the Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines, about three minutes each way. That leaves roughly forty minutes on the ground, which is enough to walk to a shop, order and come back.

Where can I get coffee with a suitcase near Tokyo Station?

Inside the station, the Gransta branches are the easiest because you never leave the concourse. If you go outside, takeaway stands with no seating are simpler than cafés, because you never have to fit a case between tables.

How much is coffee at Tokyo Station?

Chain coffee runs roughly ¥350 to ¥500 for a regular size. Sit-down cafés in the Marunouchi buildings are considerably higher once you add a table charge or a set.
