Coffee in Ebisu — the good ones all open at 8:00

Ebisu has some of the best coffee in Tokyo and almost none of it before eight in the morning. Before 7:00 the field is two Doutor branches. At 7:00 another seven open. Then at 8:00 ten open at once — SARUTAHIKO and Blue Bottle among them — and that is when the neighbourhood actually starts.

What the list tells you

Before 7:00 there are two, and both are Doutor. That is the entire field. If you are on an early train, this is what Ebisu has, and it is the same cup you would get at any station in Tokyo.

At 7:00 the count jumps to seven, and one of them is independent. coffee family rates 4.4 and is a short walk from the west exit. The other seven are chains. ANTICO CAFFÈ AL AVIS in atré reads like a single Italian café and has shops in Tokyo and Osaka; SARUTAHIKO, which many people take for a local roaster, has more than twenty.

At 8:00 the neighbourhood switches on: ten open in the same minute. SARUTAHIKO's main shop rates 4.5 across 1,428 reviews and Blue Bottle rates 4.1 across 482. Around them COZZYY, JOE TALK and West Georgia St. all open at 8:00 too. There is no gradual build here.

The best-rated place open by 8:00 is West Georgia St. Morning & Lunch at ★4.6 across 318 reviews. It is an independent and it opens at 8:00, which is the shape of the whole survey: across all ten neighbourhoods, every shop open before 7:00 is a chain.

If you are up before eight

Kanda is about twenty minutes on the Yamanote line and opens at 7:00, with independents rather than only chains. It is not the neighbourhood Ebisu is, but it is awake earlier.

The stand I run is there, one minute from Kanda Station's west exit, ¥390 before tax, takeaway only with no seats. If your morning starts at eight anyway, SARUTAHIKO is the better answer and it is a two-minute walk from Ebisu Station.
