Jimbocho is the best coffee neighbourhood in central Tokyo. It is also almost entirely shut until 11:00. The second-hand bookshops it is famous for open late, and the cafés keep the same hours — which catches out anyone who arrives in the morning expecting the coffee scene they read about.

Weekday opening times and ratings from public Google Maps listings, checked 12 August 2026. Highlighted rows open before 9:00. Two more venues in the radius publish no opening time (a McDonald's and a hotel) and are left out. Weekend hours differ — GLITCH, for instance, opens an hour later.
Before 8:00 there are three options and two are chains. Starbucks and Tully's at 7:00, Miyabi at 7:15. That is it. If your plan was an early pour-over in Jimbocho, the plan does not work.
GLITCH at 8:00 is the earliest serious coffee. It rates 4.4 across more than 2,300 reviews, which makes it the most-reviewed specialty shop in this part of Tokyo by a wide margin. Single origin, light roast, no blends.
The neighbourhood properly opens at 11:00. Pharos (4.5), Mafumi (4.4), Kanda Brazil, Koseto — the independent coffee is concentrated in a two-hour band starting late morning, and it is genuinely good. This is a place to arrive at lunchtime and stay.
Three of the cafés here have been open since before most of Tokyo was rebuilt. Ladrio opened in 1949. Milonga Nueva opened in 1953 as Ladrio's sister shop and plays Argentine tango on vinyl; it moved a short distance from its original site in 2023. Saboru opened in 1955 and still has the same wooden interior and hand-written menu.
None of them are specialty coffee in the modern sense, and comparing them to GLITCH on the coffee alone misses what they are. You are paying for a room that has not changed in seventy years, in a neighbourhood of second-hand bookshops, which is a thing that basically does not exist anywhere else in Tokyo at this density.
All three open around 11:00–11:30. None of them are places to rush.
Kanda is a ten to fifteen minute walk east, and it opens early — several shops from 7:00, including chains, a couple of old kissaten from 8:00 and a roaster at 7:30. It is not the coffee neighbourhood that Jimbocho is, but it is awake.
The stand I run is on the shopping street by Kanda Station's west exit, open from 7:00 on weekdays, ¥390 before tax for the house drip. It is takeaway only with no seats — the opposite of what Jimbocho is for, which is sitting down for two hours with a book.

Late. Two chains open at 7:00 and GLITCH COFFEE at 8:00, but most of the neighbourhood starts at 11:00 or 11:30. Jimbocho keeps bookshop hours — the second-hand bookshops it is famous for open around 10:00 to 11:00 too.
About 400 m from Jimbocho Station, open from 8:00 on weekdays and 9:00 at weekends. It rates 4.4 across more than 2,300 reviews, the highest-reviewed specialty coffee shop in this part of Tokyo.
Ladrio has been open since 1949, Milonga Nueva since 1953 as its sister shop, and Saboru since 1955. All three open around 11:00 to 11:30. Milonga Nueva plays Argentine tango and moved a short distance from its original site in 2023.
Only from Starbucks or Tully's at 7:00, or Miyabi at 7:15. If you want independent coffee before 8:00, Kanda is a ten to fifteen minute walk east and has shops opening at 7:00.
Yes — it is the strongest coffee neighbourhood in central Tokyo, with both serious specialty roasters and kissaten that have been running for seventy years. Just arrive after 11:00, or you will find shutters.
About ten to fifteen minutes on foot heading west, or one stop plus a short walk if you would rather not walk it.
