What the list tells you

Only two opens before 7:00. A Doutor at 6:45. At 7:00 another five follow, of which Kanda Coffee — rated 4.3 across 510 reviews — is the one that is not a chain.

GLITCH at 8:00 is the earliest serious coffee. It rates 4.4 across 2,372 reviews, the most-reviewed specialty shop in this part of Tokyo by a wide margin. Single origin, light roast, no blends. SENDAI-Kaffee opens at the same hour and rates 4.3.

Between 8:30 and 10:00, nothing new opens. Cotti Coffee at 8:30 is the last of the early tier and the next opening is at 10:00. If you arrive at nine you are waiting, though there is a street of second-hand bookshops to wait on.

The kissaten are the point, and they open at 11:00. Ladrio opened in 1949, Milonga Nueva in 1953 and Saboru in 1955. Alongside them cafe ataraxia rates 4.7, Pharos 4.5 and Mametora Roastery 4.5. Kanda is a ten-minute walk east and opens at 7:00. It has none of Jimbocho's specialty coffee, which is the reason this page points the other way once the shops are open.
