Coffee near Shinjuku Station — and which exit to use

Shinjuku has 32 places open by 8:00, third of the ten neighbourhoods measured behind Tokyo Station and Kanda. Six open before 7:00 and another 14 at 7:00 — of which two are independent, BERG and Cafe la Voie. Everything earlier is a chain.

What the list tells you

Before 7:00 it is three McDonald's branches, Beck's, Doutor and Caffè Veloce. The station handles more passengers than any other in the world and the early coffee is still a handful of chains. Beck's on the platform side and Doutor are the shops actually built for the first trains.

At 7:00, 14 open — and Verve is one of them. Verve Coffee Roasters in NEWoMan rates 4.3 across 1,595 reviews and opens at the same hour as the eight Starbucks branches around it — it is a Californian chain, not a local roaster. BERG, the standing café by the east exit, opens at 7:00 too, rates 4.2 across 2,237 reviews, and is one of two independent shops open at that hour.

Eight of the 7:00 openings are Starbucks. Including a Reserve store in Marui. If you are counting shops rather than choices, Shinjuku looks well served; if you are counting distinct options, it is thinner than the number suggests.

The exit matters more than the distance. Shinjuku Station has more than two hundred exits and the walk between them can take fifteen minutes. Every shop below is within 400 m of the station centre — Verve is in NEWoMan on the south side, Blue Bottle is near the east. A 300 m shop can be a twenty-minute walk if you start from the wrong side.

If you are changing trains

Blue Bottle's Shinjuku café rates 4.1 across 4,347 reviews and opens at 8:00, which is too late for an early connection. At 7:00 Verve is the one worth the walk; before 7:00, take what the station gives you.
