Blue Bottle and three others arrive at 8:00. Blue Bottle's Shinjuku café carries 4,345 reviews, the most in this list. The Matcha Tokyo, Tsubakiya and Coffee Times open at the same time. The eight o'clock cluster is where the choice actually is.
The old kissaten open late and are worth the wait. Coffee L'ambre at 9:30 and Cafe Aaliya at 9:00 — the latter rates 4.3 across 2,471 reviews and is known for its French toast rather than its coffee. Neither is a morning-commute option.
Getting oriented
Shinjuku Station has more than two hundred exits and the walk between them can take fifteen minutes. Every shop in the list above is within 400 m of the station centre, but which exit you use matters far more than the distance — Verve is in NEWoMan on the south side, Blue Bottle is near the east.
