What the list tells you

The first coffee is inside the station at 6:30. Pensta in ecute, then Beck's and Doutor at 6:45. Three open before 7:00 and all of them are within the concourse or attached to it.

At 7:00 another seven open, and every one is a chain. Starbucks in atré, Doutor, Saint Marc, Ueshima, Tully's. If you want coffee before the trains fill up, this is the field.

Nothing independent is open here until 9:00. Coffee Katsura opens at 7:30 and rates 4.4 across 550 reviews, and reads as a neighbourhood kissaten — but there are three of them around Ueno. I run a stand in Kanda, four stops south on the Yamanote line, open from 7:00 on weekdays. For Ueno itself the honest answer before 7:00 is the concourse.
