Shibuya has 27 places open by 8:00 and not one independent among them until 8:00 exactly. 14 open at 7:00 and every one of them is a chain.

What the list tells you

Before 7:00 it is three Excelsior branches, Cafe Lounge Estacion Cafe and Doutor. Excelsior opens at 6:00 near the New South exit and two more branches follow at 6:45 and 6:50. For a district this size, five shops before 7:00 is thin.

At 7:00, 14 open and not one is independent. Eight Starbucks, three McDonald's, Dean & DeLuca, Tully's, Doutor and Veloce. The count looks generous until you notice there is no choice in it.

The first independent opens at 8:00, and there are three of them. CHIMNEY COFFEE and WHITE GLASS COFFEE, both rated 4.2. Six of the ten neighbourhoods measured have an independent open by 7:00; Shibuya, Ginza, Ueno and Akihabara do not. Café stock here turns over fast, and the shops that survive on these rents are the ones with corporate leases.

If you want something other than a chain

Ebisu is one stop south and its independents open at 7:00 and 8:00. Kanda is fifteen minutes east on the Ginza line and opens at 7:00.

I run a stand at the Kanda end — takeaway only, no seats, which is the opposite of what Shibuya is for. Before 7:30 in Shibuya the honest answer is Excelsior.
